SHRUTHI INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH AND TRAINING
IN SPEECH & HEARING
This unit was started in the year 1999, with a view to develop man power in the field of Audiology, Speech Language Pathology.
In India, 10% of the total population is disabled, of which approximately 4 to 5% are affected with Speech / Hearing problems.45,000 Speech & Hearing professionals are required to treat this section of population but only 1000 are available in the country. Hence there is dire need to develop professionals in this field.
Since 1999 College has developed not only in terms of strength of students but also in terms of quality training. This year, our students have been enriched with knowledge imparted by visiting professionals of par excellence in the field.
Our commitment to the quality in this pursuit be it service delivery, training, awareness creation, advocacy, community participated programmes has reaped rich rewards.
M.Sc. (ASLP)
This course was started in the year 2004-05 with intake of 10 students. From 3rd Batch the intake capacity was increased to 13 students with the approval of Rehabilitation Council of India and Osmania University. The students were selected as per rules on basis of rank obtained in the entrance examination conducted by the Osmania University duly following prescribed roster. The students enrolled this year were not only from different districts of A.P. but also from various states of the country.
B.Sc (ASLP) – Secunderabad
It was started in the year 1999 with 6 students. The present intake capacity is 40 students per batch. This was possible with the permission of RCI, O.U. and A.P. State council for Higher Education. The students in the present batch are not only from A.P. but from all over the country.
Clinical Case Load
Shruthi College is a gold mine for variety and quantum of cases,. The clinical case load this year was not only limited to children with hearing loss, developmental delays, Mental retardation etc. but also Adult Clients with speech problem, post stroke or traumatic brain injury, adults & children with voice problem, articulation problem have also taken speech therapy.
Outreach Programs
Infant Screening Program
Shruthi College is conducting Infant Hearing Screening Program at the following hospitals in Hyderabad.
*Fernandez Hospital
*Healing Touch Hospital
*Basant Sahaney Hospital
Total number of babies screened till date are 700.
School Screening Program
Shruthi College participated in various school camps and evaluated children with Speech & Hearing problems in the following schools in Twin cities.
Other Activities
Seminars & Conference:
Seminar on “Genetics of Speech & Hearing” Sponsored by RCI was conducted on 15.12.2007 Around 320 participants from all over the country participated in the seminar.
One day Students “Seminar on Evidence Based Practice” was conducted on 16.12.2007 and around 150 participants from all over the country participated in the seminar
Two day Seminar on Auditory Verbal Therapy & Parent Training Programme was conducted on 1st & 2nd of March 2008. This seminar was for practicing speech & Hearing Professionals, students of Speech & Hearing, Students of Special Education Hearing Impairment and parents of Hearing Impaired Children. Around 350 participants including parents have attended the seminar.
The following developmental activities were undertaken to meet O.U. and RCI norms.
1. Classroom size increased to fit 40 students in B.Sc. and 20 students in M.Sc. and Complete floor allotted for B.Sc. and M.Sc. classes
2. Library size increased and reading area introduced in the library
3. New conference hall with a capacity of around 110 seats constructed on the 3rd floor for clinical conferences and journal club presentations
4. Auditorium was revamped to accommodate around 400 seats for conducting seminars and workshops.
5. Case History rooms increased from 6 to 12.
6. Speech therapy rooms increased from 20 to 40.
7. Modernization Audiology labs by full sound treatment & meeting international standards constructed on 1st floor.
8. Hearing science lab constructed on 1st floor.
9. Demonstration therapy room for demonstrating special cases to students constructed on 2nd floor in therapy block
10. latest equipment as per RCI regulations purchased
11. Computer assisted learning lab established with 6 computers for giving students an opportunity to learn Anatomy, Physiology and other simulated work with regards to practical’s using live demonstrations, 3 dimensional views and also gain extra input through internet etc.
12. Library Books increased in terms of titles and volumes.
13. We are presently having two visiting professors on a regular basis :-
1. Dr. M. N. Nagaraja, Conslt. Director and
2. Dr. Medha Adhyaru along with the regular faculty.
Other visiting professors include Dr. N.P. Nataraja, Dr. G. Purushotama, Dr. M. Jayaram.
14. Since last 3 years we have been conducting a minimum of 3 seminars every year to give an opportunity for our students to gain exposure to the latest developments happening in the field.
NATIONAL PROGRAM ON PREVENTION & CONTROL OF DEAFNESS, PROJECT
The Ministry of Health & Family welfare, Govt. of India has taken a new initiative by launching a pilot phase of National Programme of Prevention and control of deafness (NPPCD) in indentified 25 districts of 11 states and union territories of India. Out of 25 districts three districts are in Andhra Pradesh (Nalgonda, Mahboob Nagar, Hyderabad). This pilot phase has been entrusted to Sweekaar Rehabilitation Institute for Handicapped and we have trained 210 Medical Officers, 350 child development project Officers (CDPO), 700 Public Health Nurses (PHN) and Multipurpose workers, 9000 Anganwadi Workers (AWW) and Accredited Social Health Workers (ASHA) in 3 districts of Andhra Pradesh.
The main objective of the program is to train professionals in Early Identification, diagnosis, treatment of ear problem, development of institutional capacity and promote out reach activities and public awareness.
