MISSION FOR ELIMINATION OF POVERTY IN MUNICIPAL AREAS (MEPMA) (Indira Kranti Pathakam – Urban)
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is implementing various programmes for the upliftment and empowerment of vulnerable people through SHG formation, Bank linkages, providing livelihoods and also GHMC is also taking up welfare activities for the persons with Disability with the support of MEPMA as part of strategy for poverty alleviation. Further, in the action plan of IKP-Urban for this year contains formation of 4000 SHGs of Disabled persons and facilitating Bank linkages worth of Rs. 10 Crores.
Background:
It is well recognized that people with disabilities are among the poorest and most vulnerable. They are discriminated and excluded even by other poor persons. The Secunderabad (Circle No:18) Circle of North Zone of (GHMC) Municipality/Corporation through MEPMA(IKP-Urban) has developed a distinctive approach by entering MOU with Sweekaar Rehabilitation Institute for the Handicapped (NGO) at town level with effect from 1st November, 2008 to 31st October, 2009 to mainstream persons with disabilities in all the efforts for poverty reduction. It is increasingly acknowledged that disability is both a cause and consequence of poverty is not just income disparity but also social exclusion and powerlessness.
Goal:
Formation, Strengthening and nurturing of SHGs and Federations of Disabled people and empowering them through their self managed, Self reliant SHGs and federations on participatory Community Development and Community Rehabilitation model in Collaboration with our Sweekaar Rehabilitation Institute for the Handicapped (NGO), in Circle No#18, Secunderabad Municipality under MEPMA (IKP-Urban).
