Even today many pediatrician, physicians and neurologists think that medicines have least role in the rehabilitation process. There are so many newer generation of drugs available in the market, which are neurotrophic, nerve regenerating. Latest medicines definitely support in strengthening and facilitating the rehabilitation process initiated by other specialists. Do Medicine Have Side Effects ? All medicines available in the market are time- tested, research based and government approved. All these drugs are approved by the Drug Controller of India. The side effects are minimum. There is unnecessary over- apprehension among the doctors and the parents of the wards and professionals involved in the rehabilitation. What is my role as a Parent when I place my child in a center ? As a parent your role is, first of all accepting the child's disability / problem. Then involving yourself in the therapy and all the activities with commitment along with the therapist in the institute so as to continue it at home Who will prescribe ? A parent, who is a computer operator, is working in an office or PhD Scientist in CCMB, Pediatrician or any Medical Doctor, who does not have experience or exposure to the disabled rehabilitation can not judge the medical treatment. One should do his own job not other's job. Everybody should have their limitation to their own area. They should be proficient in their work area; they can not claim expertise in other's area. My Family Doctor does not advice medicine, what to do ? If your family doctor does not advice any medicine, he can not do the job of a surgeon or a cardiologist. A Specialist in the concern area alone can advise better the children should not be deprived of the benefit of latest medicine. Children have no voice. We should be their voice. No. By using medicines, you are controlling the behaviour problem, emotional problems, hyperactivity, improving the cognition attention. Once the child is stabilized by medication, it will be easy to introduce other therapies (Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Behaviour Modification Therapy, Visual Stimulation and Cognitive Stimulation). By using medicines, we are facilitating the other therapists and the results will be better. The interventions by the team alone can help the child. No single therapist can help the child. It is a holistic approach. Regular review is required. How long an outstation case has to stay in city ? Stay is required for those children who are hyperactive, restless, having behaviour problems, those who need intensive medical care. Therapies will be started only when the child is stabilized. For outstation cases, we give home based management training. Mother has to learn the skills and carry on at home. How far the children with Autism / ADHD / Learning Disorders are helped by your center? Seeing is believing. Visit Sweekaar, interact with the parents who are under treatment, interact with the patients who are already receiving services. Though we cannot make a child 100% normal, many are helped to a large extent.
